How to Grow Flowers in Sandustry
Seeds come free from your gold line. How to wet them, grow them, what a Flower drops, and the density tie that makes wet seeds hard to mass produce.

Seeds fall out of your Kinetic Press alongside the Gold — one of each, per Burnt Residue. Wet a Seed with Water and it becomes a Wet Seed; drop that on a Planter Box and it grows a Flower. Break the Flower for 4 Amethelis and 1 Gold. The awkward step is the middle one: a Wet Seed weighs exactly the same as Water, so it will not separate out of a pool on its own.
Most players meet Seeds as litter. They come out of the Kinetic Press with the Gold, they are not Gold, and they end up swept into a corner.
They are the start of a second gold line — one that runs on the waste from the first.
The whole chain
Officially, three structures turn resources into Gold: the Shaker, the Kinetic Press, and the Planter Box. Two of them are already in your factory. This is the third.

Step 1 — the Seeds you already have
The Kinetic Press turns 1 Burnt Residue into 1 Gold and 1 Seed, provided the Burnt Residue lands from at least 25 blocks up. That is the same press and the same drop height covered on the slag and residue page — you are not building anything new, you are keeping the other output.
A Seed is a dense solid at 150 and it is one of the few materials the wiki marks as wettable.
Step 2 — wetting them, and why this is the hard part
A Seed touching a Water pixel becomes a Wet Seed. Simple to describe, awkward to automate.
Dry Seeds sit at density 150, so in water they sink and gather. Wet Seeds sit at 100 — exactly Water’s own density. They do not sink, they do not float, they hang in the water wherever they were made. The official page says so plainly, calling effective Wet Seed production a difficult challenge.
Two consequences worth planning around:
- A Filter will not skim Wet Seeds off a pool. Nothing settles below anything else, so there is no bottom layer to pull from. Filters and density covers what to do with a tie like this — feed it thin, do not feed it deep.
- Seeds and Wet Seeds do separate from each other. 150 against 100 means dry Seeds sink below the wet ones. Officially noted on both pages, and it is the one piece of sorting this step gives you for free.
The practical shape is a shallow tray rather than a tank: enough water to wet what arrives, not so much that finished Wet Seeds are suspended somewhere you cannot reach them. Moving water has the Pump and Vent rules for filling that tray without drowning it.
Step 3 — the Planter Box

Place a Wet Seed on top and it grows into a Flower. That is the entire operation — no power, no second input.
One detail matters for layout: the only solid pixels that can pass down through a Planter Box are Gold and Amethelis. In other words the box is its own filter, and it passes exactly the two things a Flower drops. Build with the collection below it and the harvest sorts itself.
Step 4 — harvesting
A Flower is a stem of Vine with a head of 4 Amethelis and 1 Gold. Destroy it — weapons work, and so does fire — and that is what falls.
Vine has 1 HP, burns, and leaves nothing behind, so burning the whole plant costs you only the stem. That is what makes a Lava-fed auto-burner attractive here: the official Lava page names Flower auto-burners in the same breath as Residue ones, and moving lava covers how to get a lava cell where you want it.
Two things to know about Amethelis before you build the collection:
- It is density 40 — lighter than almost everything, so it rides on top of a mixed pile.
- Its matter type is Wisp, which the official page says makes it drift side to side as it falls rather than dropping straight down.
That second property is why a narrow catch under a flower bed disappoints. Give the Amethelis somewhere wide to land.
Step 5 — drying, and where the line goes next
Both buildings this step needs come from one unlock:

The Steam Dryer converts Amethelis into Dry Amethelis, and it wants the two inputs on opposite faces: Amethelis touching the top, Steam touching the bottom. A small amount of Steam is consumed each time.
It only does that one job. It will not dry Wet Sand or Wet Seeds — no shortcut back through step 2.
Burn the Dry Amethelis and you get Florin, a gas. The Condenser — the other half of that same 2,500 Gold unlock — turns it into liquid Florinol, and Florinol is what fills a Florinol Battery.
The Condenser needs Snow to do it. The research tree says so directly: it converts gases into liquids using snow. So this step has a third requirement that is easy to miss when costing the line — a Snow supply, which in practice means the Cryoblaster at tier 2 and 1,000 Gold, since it makes Snow indefinitely. If you already built one to move lava, you have it.
So turning flowers into stored energy costs 2,500 Gold for Drying & Condensing, 1,000 for the Cryoblaster if you do not have one, and then the Battery itself — energy unlocks prices that branch.
Is it worth it
Judge it against what the Seeds cost you, which is nothing — they arrive whether you plant them or not. Per Burnt Residue you get 1 Gold from the press either way; planting the Seed that came with it adds another 1 Gold plus 4 Amethelis — and Amethelis is the only documented source of the Florin that becomes Florinol.
The cost is not Gold, it is layout: a wetting tray that does not drown its own output, and a catch wide enough for a material that falls sideways.
