Budget 12–14 hours for the main story, 15–18 hours with regular exploration, and roughly 20–25 hours for 100% completion. Focus’s pre-release guidance was approximately 20 hours; early player runs vary more widely, so the official estimate and observed ranges are shown separately.
Playtime by approach
| Play style | Useful planning range |
|---|---|
| Fast story run | 10–12 hours |
| Typical main story | 12–14 hours |
| Story plus exploration | 15–18 hours |
| Platinum / near-100% | 20–25 hours |
| Publisher guidance | Approximately 20 hours |
| HowLongToBeat, first 16 submissions | 11 h story · 13 h with extras · 13½ h completionist |
Cutscenes, combat difficulty and time spent searching for Resonance Points create most of the variation. An 8–11 hour early report is possible for a fast run; it should not be presented as the only answer when the publisher and completion guides point higher. The HowLongToBeat row is a launch-week sample of sixteen players and will move as the community fills in.
How many chapters are there?
There are 14 chapters. Thirteen carry a completion trophy of their own; the fourteenth, What Remains, is covered by the all-chapters trophy instead, which is why trophy-based lists stop at 13. The spoiler-light chapter names are:
- Blood Ties
- Felons
- Those Before Us
- From Hell It Rose
- Desolation It Wrought
- What Lies Beneath
- Death It Sowed
- Resonance
- Night Has Come
- Parallel Paths
- Patera
- Fading Light
- As One
- What Remains
For directions rather than names, use the chapter-by-chapter walkthrough. The puzzle index isolates the Chapter 4, 5, 10 and 11 mechanisms without making you scan a trophy guide.
Platinum and 100% time
The published trophy roadmap estimates around 20 hours and rates the Platinum 3/10. The time risk is not difficulty; it is the single-playthrough skill requirement. You need 165 of 200 Resonance Points in one run because chapter select restores the state from when that chapter was first reached.
Read the trophy warning before starting if you want the Platinum without a second playthrough.
Is it the longest Plague Tale game?
Longer than Innocence on every measure except the launch-week player sample; shorter than Requiem’s main story on every measure except Focus’s own guidance. HowLongToBeat medians, the same metric for all three games, with the number of submissions behind each row:
| Game | Main story | Main + extras | Completionist | Submissions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A Plague Tale: Innocence | 11 h | 12½ h | 16 h | 5,600 |
| A Plague Tale: Requiem | 17 h | 19½ h | 27½ h | 2,457 |
| Resonance, launch week | 11 h | 13 h | 13½ h | 16 |
Sixteen submissions is a launch-week sample, so the Resonance row will move. Focus’s 20-hour guidance is the only figure that makes it the longest game in the series; the reviewer ranges above put a typical first run past Innocence and a few hours short of Requiem’s 17-hour median.
Length FAQ
Can you finish Resonance in a weekend?
Yes. A normal story run fits into two long sessions; exploration or trophy cleanup pushes it closer to three or four.
Does difficulty change the length?
It can. Combat retries add time, while Narrative difficulty and accessibility assists can shorten a story-focused run.
