How to read this

Sapphires are what a run pays out when it ends, and the amount scales with how deep you got and how many bosses you killed on the way. They are the only currency the Destiny Inscription takes, and they are also spent inside the Pocket Dimension during a run — so every Sapphire you spend down there is one you are not spending on permanent progress.

Two things are not about Sapphires at all:

  • Tier 3 will not open until you finish the Home Repairs side quest, no matter what you are holding. Home Repairs itself is 3 Sapphires, in Tier 1.
  • Hard Mode is free, but it does not appear until you have cleared Chapter 2.

Several nodes are quests rather than upgrades. Buying them starts a job in the village; the payoff only lands once you have done it. Terrain Recovery is the clearest example — it costs 4 Sapphires, and what you are buying is the right to solve the Ark tablet puzzle and take the Willpower talent.

The cheapest useful opening

Two nodes cost nothing at all, and the two that matter most early cost 5 between them:

Buy Tier Sapphires Why
Tablet 0 Free Turns Tablets on. Without it they do not function
Home Repairs 1 3 Unlocks Talents, and gates all of Tier 3
Heavy Weapon Training 2 2 The Greatsword. Cheapest weapon in the tree by a wide margin
Hard Mode 4 Free After Chapter 2. Free is free

Everything else is a judgement call about how you play. What is not a judgement call is that leaving the two free nodes unbought is pure loss.

Where these numbers come from

Node names, tiers, costs and the quoted in-game text come from Kean’s Sephiria Compendium, a community-maintained record that tracks the current patch — it is marked up to date with 1.0.29, the same version this page is written against.

Every figure here was checked by arithmetic before publishing: the costs of the nodes in each tier have to add up to the total that tier declares, and every tier does. That check runs again on every build, and the totals in the answer above are rendered from the same file the planner reads — so this page cannot drift out of agreement with its own data. The check earned its place immediately: it caught a node missing from our transcription.
